There are Some Great Wind Generators for Homeowners
Even though most residential wind generators are optimized for 20 mph winds there is a broad selection of designs to chose from. There are two different basic designs that all wind generators spawn from. There are vertical axis and horizontal axis wind power generators. This is about horizontal axis designs and they can vary from dual blades to multiple blades. Each design has a specific purpose. New designs are popping up more than ever as global electrical demands increase. New designs from Sweden to the U.S. Hopefully more companies start producing systems.
The Energy Ball Wind Generator From Sweden
The "Energy Ball" is a creative design that resembles a ball. The blades are long and bent back to attach to the tail end of the wind vane. The result resembles a ball. This Swedish design was made to take advantage of low wind speeds. A price and the kilowatts haven't been released yet, but the new design shows a lot of worldwide interest and is targeted for homeowners. As more companies compete with innovative designs the homeowner wins. Competition is a good thing, especially when it's worldwide.
Honeywell's New Multiple Blade Design
Honeywell has created a wind generator for homeowners that mounts to the top of the house. The unit weighs less than 100lbs and works in 4 MPH winds. The Honeywell wind generator resembles a fan and is an inverted permanent magnet generator. The magnets are attached to the end of it's blades and the coils are located inside the outer housing. Honeywell has priced this wind power system at $4,500 and it includes grid tie. The estimated monthly output, in class four winds, is 166 kilowatts per month. The date that this system will become public is in Oct of 2009, and will be sold through ACE hardware.
